How This Scam Works

Hot reading involves researching a client in advance using publicly available information, most commonly social media profiles, to create an illusion of psychic access during a session. Before the reading begins, a reader searches the client's name, username, phone number, or email address across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other platforms. They gather details about relationship status, family members' names, recent life events, job changes, posted photos, and stated interests. This information is then introduced during the session as if accessed through intuition or spirit communication: "I'm sensing a recent change in your career — something to do with a creative role." When the client confirms and is visibly moved, trust is established. Hot reading is more sophisticated than cold reading because the information is genuinely accurate, making it far harder to dismiss.

Red Flags to Watch For

These are the most reliable warning signs that a reader is using hot reading via social media tactics against you:

• The reader asks for your full name or location before the session under seemingly administrative pretexts
• Details revealed feel suspiciously specific to things you have posted publicly online
• The reading covers only publicly visible life areas while producing vague results on private matters
• The reader seems to pause — possibly checking notes — before delivering specific facts
• Searching your own name reveals how easily the "revealed" information could have been found

What Legitimate Platforms Do Instead

Trustworthy platforms conduct text or video-based readings through their own interfaces, which limits a reader's ability to run parallel research during a session. Ethical advisors do not ask for identifying information beyond what the platform already collects. Reputable services maintain session logs and can review advisor behaviour if clients suspect research-based deception. Some platforms encourage anonymous readings or pseudonym use to reduce the opportunity for hot reading entirely, prioritising the integrity of the session over personal verification.
